Inside an ART session
What happens during Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
ART is structured, but it is not a script you have to perform. The clinician guides the process while you remain awake, aware, and in control.
A typical flow
The work is structured around a clear focus.
1. Clarify the focus
Identify the memory, image, situation, or reaction to work on and review whether ART is appropriate.
2. Notice what is present
Attend to images, thoughts, emotions, or body sensations without needing to narrate every detail aloud.
3. Guided eye movements
The clinician guides smooth eye-movement sets while you attend to the internal experience.
4. Imagery techniques
Structured imagery techniques are used while preserving your knowledge of what actually happened.
5. Check the response
Notice what has shifted, what remains distressing, and what may need further work.
6. Close the session
The session ends with attention to how you are feeling and what comes next.
No specific result, timeline, or number of sessions is guaranteed.
